Biography

Andrew Fowler is an award-winning investigative journalist and a contributing reporter for the ABC’s Foreign Correspondent and Four Corners programs. He has been chief of staff and acting foreign editor of The Australian newspaper and a reporter with SBS Dateline and Channel 7, as well as heading up the ABC’s Investigative Unit. He first interviewed Julian Assange for the ABC in May 2010.

Presentation: Why is Julian Assange the most dangerous man in the world?

Julian Assange and his WikiLeaks organisation have changed whistleblowing, journalism and it is argued many of the governments of North Africa. This talk will trace the emergence of WikiLeaks as a political force, its genesis from an underground hacking group in Melbourne to its role today challenging the most powerful nations on earth.  It will examine the role of Julian Assange, explore what drives him and examine some of the internal divisions which have caused such havoc inside the WikiLeaks organisation.  What is the future of cyber whistleblowing?  How safe is it now to dump secret documents on WikiLeaks copycat sites?  And just how important is the survival of Julian Assange as a free man to the survival of WikiLeaks?
