Presentation: Biometrics: persons, not identities
Automated biometric identification is
increasingly used to secure access to both physical and virtual spaces. We want
to make sure that we have the right person, while traditional security methods
rely on the concept of identities.
In this presentation Erica Rietveld provides a forensic perspective on biometric
issues.
What is biometrics? What can we measure, and what do these measurements mean?
How unique is a characteristic? What statistics do we need to interpret
correctly?
In many cases we do not measure people, but prints or images. How do we deal
with distortions? And how do we make reliable comparisons in uncontrolled
environments?
The presentation will present highlights of current practices, successes and
failures.
