In 1998 Alex and a few other visionaries helped create a new service industry - outsourcing the scanning of internet traffic for undesirable content. From there he went on to pioneer new ways of detecting malware without using signature based technologies, creating his own anti-virus scanner, Skeptic, and being awarded 10 patents in the field of anti-malware.
He remains heavily involved in anti-malware, currently working on detecting one off targeted trojans which use data files as their attack vectors. Currently there are about 20-50 attacks per day using this technique for the purposes of industrial espionage.
The strange case of Julie Amero Wednesday 17 september, 10:20-11:05, Penn RoomOn the 5th January 2007 substitute teacher Julie Amero was convicted of four counts of risk of injury to a minor, for apparently surfing pornography while teaching classes of 12 year olds.
However, forensic investigations of the available data paint a very different picture. This presentation explores how the forensic investigation was carried out, shows where this differs from the story presented by the prosecution in the trial, and makes recommendations on how investigations should continue in future cases of this nature.
