Mr. Jos Kuijpers is Water manager at Rijkswaterstaat Zuid-Holland, the agency of the Dutch Ministry of Transportation and Water Management which is, among other tasks, responsible for protection of the Netherlands against the water. As head of the unit Water Management he develops strategies for water management and translates these to concreet measures. Furthermore he has an advisory task to government in the fields of protection against high water, water supply, water quality and ecology. In the 80's he stood as one of the founding fathers at the cradle of the storm surge barrier Measlandkering.

Planning for measures to protect the Dutch against the flooding requires insight into the strengths and weaknesses of polders and embankments and a the continuous evaluation of impact and costs of possible events. We are never done. The Maesland Kering is the latest major project finished to protect the southern parts of the Netherlands against storm surges. In this session, Jos Kuijpers of Rijkswaterstaat will talk about how sustainability in water management is pursued.
